Hysteroscopy involves the visualization of the endometrial cavity with the aid of a hysteroscope (Telescope) inserted through the cervix. Hysteroscopy can be performed in an office setting and minor pathologies managed. A distension medium is necessary for proper visualization. These media include gaseous media such as carbon dioxide, used for diagnostic hysteroscopy, and liquid based media such as normal saline and 1.5% glycine, used for both diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy. Complications following hysteroscopy are few.
A hysteroscope should become part of the armamentarium of every gynaecologist.
