Gestational surrogacy refers to a treatment process in which another woman (gestational carrier/ surrogate) undergoes the embryo transfer process and then carries the pregnancy to term for another couple. The intending parents who are involved with the pregnancy, are typically present at the birth and take over parenting responsibilities immediately thereafter, The gestational surrogate is usually known by the intended parents. In gestational surrogacy, the pregnancy results from the transfer of an embryo created by In vitro fertilization (IVF) in a manner so the resulta nt child is not genetically related to the surrogate (children born through gestational surrogacy are not related to the surrogate).
It may be considered in the following conditions:
- A woman who doesn’t have a uterus, either born without one or has removed hers surgically.
- Medical condition that could r esult in a serious health risks to the mother or the baby.
- In cases of recurrent IVF implantation failure, Uterine abnormalities or disorders that further discourage implantation.
Ten steps to a successful gestational surrogacy plan
- An appropriate surrogate is chosen and thoroughly screened for infectious diseases and other tests that confirm she is fit to be a gestational carrier.
- Consents are signed by all parties. This is an important step in surrogacy plan. All potential issues need to be carefully clarified, put in writing and signed.
- The patient or donor is stimulated for IVF with medications to develop multiple eggs.
- The surrogate is placed on medications that suppress her own menstrual cycle and stimulate development of a receptive uterine lining.
- When the patient’s follicles are mature, an egg retrieval procedure is performed to remove eggs from her ovaries.
- The eggs are fertilized in the laboratory with her partner’s sperm or donor sperms. The embryos develop in the laboratory for 3-5 days.
- The embryos are transferred into the uterus of the surrogate where they hopefully implant and are carried to term.
- The surrogate delivers the baby
- The baby goes home from the hospital with the genetic/ Intended parents.
